Bonus Wagering Demystified

The wagering requirement decides whether a welcome bonus is worth taking. It is printed smaller than the headline percentage, it moves far more money, and it is the number almost nobody reads.

What the requirement actually asks of you

A wagering requirement — also called turnover or playthrough — is a multiple of the bonus you must bet before the money becomes withdrawable. It is cumulative turnover, not net loss. Every spin counts towards it, whether it wins or loses.

So ฿5,000 of bonus at 30x means ฿150,000 must pass through the games. If you stake ฿20 per spin, that is 7,500 spins. This is why the requirement, not the bonus size, determines whether an offer is realistic.

What clearing a bonus actually costs

Here is the part operators do not put in the advert. Every baht of turnover is exposed to the house edge. On a 96.95% RTP slot the edge is 3.05%, so pushing ฿150,000 through it costs about ฿4,575 in expected losses — regardless of how lucky you feel.

Run that for a ฿5,000 bonus on a 96.95% RTP game at each operator we track, and the offers sort themselves out:

CASINOWAGERTURNOVEREXP. COSTNET VALUE
Dafabet 20x ฿100,000 ฿3,050 +฿1,950
M88 28x ฿140,000 ฿4,270 +฿730
188BET 30x ฿150,000 ฿4,575 +฿425
Fun88 40x ฿200,000 ฿6,100 −฿1,100

Read the last column carefully. At Dafabet's 20x the expected cost of clearing is comfortably below the bonus, so the offer carries real value. At Fun88's 40x the expected cost exceeds the bonus itself — you are, on average, paying for the privilege of accepting free money.

THE RULE OF THUMB

Bonus × wagering × house edge. If that number is bigger than the bonus, the offer is negative value before you even start. It takes ten seconds with a calculator and it will save you more money than any slot strategy.

The terms that void bonuses

  • Game weighting. Slots typically count 100% towards turnover; live dealer and table games often count 10% or nothing. Clearing on a 10%-weighted game means ten times the turnover.
  • Max bet while bonused. Usually ฿100–200 per spin. Going over it can void the bonus and everything won from it. This is enforced by software, not by goodwill.
  • Time limit. Commonly 7–30 days. An unrealistic turnover inside a short window is functionally an unclearable bonus.
  • Max cashout. Some bonuses cap what you can withdraw from bonus winnings regardless of what you actually won.
  • Excluded games. High-RTP titles are often barred from bonus play precisely because they would be the sensible choice.

If you do take a bonus

  • Clear on a high-RTP, low-volatility slot — the best in our database is at 97.38%. Higher RTP means a smaller expected cost per baht of turnover.
  • Stake well under the max bet cap, not at it. The cap is a trap, not a target.
  • Check weighting before the first spin, not after.
  • Track your turnover yourself. Operator counters exist but are not always visible in real time.

And the honest alternative: many experienced players decline welcome bonuses entirely and play with a plain deposit, keeping the freedom to withdraw at any moment. Compare current terms on our casino comparison.
